The black-and-white portrait pictures Luis R. Esteves, a cadet at West Point in 1915, who was also the first Puerto Rican graduate from the famous military academy. Notably, Esteves’ parents had different hopes for his future in light of the U.S. presence in Puerto Rico after the 1898 invasion. His father supported U.S. rule and encouraged Esteves to join the military, continuing the family’s tradition of service. His mother, on the other hand, focused on the opportunities available in the United States and hoped he would pursue an education there to become an engineer.

Esteves eventually followed his father’s wishes and became a key figure in Puerto Rican military history. He started the Puerto Rico National Guard, imagining it as a local force with more independence from U.S. authority. However, in 1950, the same group was used by Esteves to stop nationalist uprisings in Puerto Rico, a choice that showed the complex relationship between Puerto Rico identity, U.S. rule, and the pressures of loyalty and resistance. Esteves’ story represents the struggles many Puerto Ricans faced in colonial rule—issues that still matter in Puerto Rico’s politics today.
