Description
This black-and-white photo captures a 4th of July parade. A large group of military members in uniform is marching under a large American flag, while people watch from the sidewalks and balconies.
The parade photo shows the complicated relationship between Puerto Rico and the United States during this time. Puerto Rico has never been fully independent, either from Spain or the U.S., but in this picture, Puerto Ricans are taking part in a holiday that celebrates American independence, the same freedom they have hoped for but not been granted.
