Description: This engraved illustration by Frank Bellew depicts armed members of the Ku Klux Klan breaking and entering into the home of an African American family as they prepare for dinner. During Jim Crow, Black Codes were created to prevent Black gun ownership. The KKK (along with white militias and police forces) were known to break into and destroy Black people’s homes in search of "contraband" weapons. Unarmed, African Americans were left even more vulnerable to white domestic terrorism and violence.
