- Leader of the New York Mohawk tribe, one of the Six Nations within the Iroquois Confederacy
- Concern over the events of the American Revolution and possible American incursion into native lands led him to influence four of the Six Nations to ally with the British.
- Is thought to have fought alongside the British during the New York City campaign in 1776, and in battles across New York State, Pennsylvania, and other areas.
- After the British defeat, Brant left the United States for the British-controlled Canada, where he attempted to advocate for his people's rights in both the new American government and the British government.
