Description: The Charro Days Fiesta in Brownsville, TX celebrates the rich traditions and culture of the Texas-Mexican border region. From 1938 to present day, the Charro Days Fiesta is an important part of Brownsville’s culture and community, which is overwhelmingly Mexican and Mexican American, because of its focus on traditional dance, dress, and performances that reflect the history of Mexican Texas, or Tejas. The word charro refers to a Mexican horseman of great skill who would perform in competitions showing off their vaquero, or cattle ranching, skills – a legacy still reflected in Texan cowboy and rodeo culture. This newsreel captures a portion of the 1956 fiesta, which shows children performing various Mexican folk dances.
