Description: In 1664, the British took control of New Netherland renaming the colony New York. Under the command of James, Duke of York, the British sought to turn New York colony into a major market for slaves. Being the Duke of York held an interest in the Royal African Company, the colony established an official slave market on Wall Street, between Pearl and Water Streets in 1711.
