<text>Cornelia Conway Fenton Horsford (1861-1944)

Cornelia "Nellie" Conway Fenton Horsford was an 8th generation descendant of the Sylvester family. During her lifetime, Sylvester Manor served as a summer home for the family -- a drastic change from the manor's past uses. This selection from Cornelia's diary, written when she was twenty-one years old, shows her deep connection to summers at Shelter Island and the influence they had on her girlhood and womanhood. Audiences may consider the universality of personal connections to place.

Audiences may also consider the differences in lifestyle that an affluent white woman in the 19th century experienced compared to her ancestors. Cornelia was highly educated and followed in her father's footsteps to pursue archaeology, taking an expedition to Iceland to study structures built by Viking settlers. In her spare time she also practiced watercolor painting and poetry, as demonstrated by her diary entry.

Cornelia inherited Sylvester Manor following her mother's death in 1903. She never married and maintained the property until her own death in 1944. She devoted her time at the Manor to garden work, renovating the property to modernize it, and studying her family history.</text>
