Description
According to the A-files, "George" Yuke Kee Lee first moved to 651 Clay Street in San Francisco, California in 1945, and resided there whilst submitting his application for naturalized citizenship. The map illuminates the dense, bustling community where Lee lived right in the heart of Chinatown, with laundromats, restaurants, garment shops, etc. San Francisco's Chinatown is well known as the oldest and largest Chinatown in the United States. Lee would have relocated to San Francisco just two years after Congress passed the Chinese Exclusion Repeal Act, which granted Chinese aliens naturalization rights and reified Chinatown's role as a pivotal site for Chinese American community and political activity.
