They would grow into a family of eight. The baptismal records for five of their children span the years from 1926 to 1941. Their children are named (in order from oldest to youngest): Carmen Trujillo Reyes, Margerita Trujillo Reyes, Juan Trujillo Reyes, Gabriel Trujillo Reyes, Maria Guadalupe Trujillo, and Andres Trujillo Reyes. The photo from the manual shows Mexican girls in a sewing class. According to her A-file, Teresa Reyes Trujillo attended school in the Pomona Unified School District. This manual hints at what girls who had come to the U.S. from Mexico encountered in California schools. The manual emphasized the importance of "Americanizing" Mexican girls, offered a guide to teaching "homemaking for the foreign girl who comes to us," and envisioned students as a moldable workforce. "We who employ them are challenged to raise their standards of living, improve sanitation, and control disease," wrote author Pearl Idelia Ellis. "If we expect them to adopt to our customs, our ideals, and our country, let us set them a most worthy example." While the map was not part of her A-file, Teresa Reyes Trujillo's childhood home is evident on the one of the map's detail pages. An enlarged section from the detail page more clearly shows Trujillo's childhood home at 859 West 2nd Street. It's unclear where Trujillo's family first settled when they came to the U.S. in 1910, and Trujillo, who was only three-years old at the time, may not have known herself. A document from1971 in her A-file says the family was bound for Chicago; another from 1972 says their destination was Kansas City, Missouri. What is certain is that by September, 1915 when Trujillo began first grade, the family was living at 859 West 2nd Street in Pomona, California, according to school records in her A-file. Pomona's population increased from about 10,000 in 1910 to nearly 14,000 residents in 1920, according to the 1920 U.S. Census. This reflected, in part, a growth in immigration from Mexico, fueled by both the Mexican Revolution and U.S. government programs designed to ease World War I-related labor shortages. Trujillo provided these materials, including baptismal records for herself and her American-born children, school records, and proof of land owndership, to the INS as part of a laborious process to gain legal status. Trujillo's first effort was unsuccessful, but after she supplemented her application with additional information, the INS approved her "lawful permanent status" on July 20, 1972. The A-file doesn't reveal what specifically prompted Trujillo to launch this effort, but it shows that it took years to complete and required her to gather a wide range of materials from both side of the U.S.-Mexico border. In all, the pages in the A-file show an outline of Trujillo, with glimpses of her education, family, and spiritual life.
